MAKING IT FAIR FOR CHILD WITNESSES
The Research Process
Stage Four:
Cross-examination
Approximately one year after the event, a barrister questioned each child about what they saw during the talk. This provided an indication of how the children fared when challenged about their evidence.
In an actual court case, barristers question child witnesses using a live television link. We simulated this in our research, by having the barristers communicate with the children via Skype.
A member of our team was with the child while the barrister cross-examined their evidence and, despite having to answer some rather tricky questions, the children very much enjoyed taking part in this phase of the project!
